Tackling Solar Sales Objections: The Preemptive Strike Approach
Keep in mind that the best way to overcome objections is to attack them Preemptively. In solar sales, why wait for objections to pop up like unwanted whack-a-moles when you can beat them to the punch? The trick is to play the mind-reader and bring up those pesky concerns before the homeowner does. Think of it as objection jujitsu - flipping potential doubts into solar superpoints right from the get-go!

It’s like showing up to a duel with the answers already tucked in your holster. This approach not only smooths out the sales path but also makes homeowners feel like you truly get them, setting the stage for a more open and engaging conversation.
So, in the world of solar sales, the best offense is a good, well-timed defense. Tackle those objections head-on and early, and watch your sales conversations turn from wary to wonderful! 🌞
Overcoming The Solar Industry’s Top Ten Objections
As we all know, there are about 10 REAL objections homeowners typically have when considering solar. Becoming a professional at handling these objections can be a game-changer for your commissions. In the dynamic realm of solar sales, professionals frequently encounter a spectrum of objections from homeowners. These range from concerns about costs and aesthetics to doubts about technology and energy integration. Each objection reflects a deeper question about the value, efficiency, and practicality of transitioning to solar energy. By harnessing the power of NEPQ (Neuro-Emotional Persuasion Questioning) techniques, solar sales representatives can effectively address these objections, transforming them into compelling opportunities to showcase the multifaceted benefits of solar power. This approach not only allays homeowner concerns but also underscores the viability and advantages of solar energy in today's energy landscape.
1. Objection: "Solar Panels are Too Expensive."
Objection: The perceived initial cost, even with no upfront options, scares homeowners as they believe it cost thousands to get solar. This is your chance to educate the homeowner and turn this objection into a major WIN.
NEPQ Strategy: Ask questions that lead the homeowner to consider the long-term financial benefits and the lack of the short-term financial commitment. For example. "This is exactly why I’m here! I’m sure you’ve talked to the other guys at your door/on the phone that want to get you to pay thousands up front right? …. Well! Best of all is I’m actually here to see if you qualify for the state and government programs where our job is to get you solar at $0 cost out of pocket. With that being said if i can get you $0 initial investment , How do you see the initial cost in comparison to the potential savings over the next few years?"
Response 2 : "I totally understand your concern about the initial investment.I have friends that went solar 5+ years ago and they had to pay upwards of $10,000 just to get the process started! However, this is exactly why i am calling today! Thanks to government and state incentives and the fact that utilities know we need to start going green more and more each year. Solar panels are more affordable than ever and we don’t have to pay a single penny out of pocket in order to go solar, there are various options that have been put together by these government incentives where the goal is just a bill swap from your current electric bill to a lower and more affordable solar bill. These programs enable us homeowners to see savings on our energy bills on MONTH 1 and depending on which program we go with we get massive tax incentives + annual cash back!
2. Objection: "I'm Not Planning to Stay in My Home Long Enough."
Objection: Planning to move soon.
NEPQ Strategy: Highlight immediate benefits and provide the major benefits they receive to assist in relocation if they have solar. "Considering the increased home value and faster sale potential, how might going solar now benefit you even if you plan to move?"
Response 2 : "That's a valid point. However, installing solar panels can actually increase your home's value and make it more attractive to buyers if you decide to sell. In fact , Zillow released a report a couple years ago that shows Homes with solar panels often sell faster and at a higher price point than those without. The beauty is you don’t invest a penny to swap your bill over to solar , but you will gain major value when you do decide to sell your home!
3. Objection: "I Don't Think Solar Will Work Well in My Area."/ “ Overwhelmed by complex process”
Objection: Overwhelmed by the process , technology and their area.
NEPQ Strategy: Simplify and educate. Break down the process as if you are speaking to a 5th grader. "Totally understandable! What part of the solar process seems most complex to you, and how can I help clarify it? “
Response: "That’s exactly why i am here! Many people are surprised to learn that solar panels don't require extremely sunny weather to be effective. They can generate significant energy even on cloudy days. All i’m doing today is prequalifying homeowners to then provide a site-specific analysis to show how much energy you could realistically generate. If i am speaking to you today it’s because you’ve already past out prequalification process and you are a fantastic candidate to go solar with tons of savings.
4. Objection: "I've Heard Solar Panels Require a Lot of Maintenance."/ "I'm worried about the long-term maintenance of solar panels." / "I've heard cleaning and upkeep of solar panels is expensive."
NEPQ Response: Start by empathizing, then lead the homeowner to reflect on the benefits.
"I understand maintenance can be a concern. In your experience, what kind of maintenance issues are you most worried about with solar panels?"
"Have you considered how the long-term benefits of solar energy might outweigh the minimal maintenance it requires?"( WARRANTY)
NEPQ Response: Guide them towards understanding the actual costs and minimal upkeep.
"What have you heard about the costs of maintaining solar panels?"
"Would you be interested in learning how most solar panels require little to no cleaning and the costs are usually much lower than expected?"
Additional : "I'm not technically savvy; I won’t know if the panels are working correctly."
NEPQ Response: Educate them on the simplicity and support available.
"It's important that you feel comfortable with your solar system. What concerns you most about monitoring and understanding its performance?"
"How would you feel knowing that our solar systems come with user-friendly monitoring tools and a dedicated support team to assist you anytime?"
Response: "Actually, solar panels require very little maintenance. They're designed to withstand harsh weather and have long lifespans. The beauty of our systems is that they come with a 25 year warranty that covers every single component! So the panels are covered , the conduits are covered, the roof underneath the panels are even covered , but most impressively of all , the amount of POWER that the panels produce are covered! So if at any point in time for some reason our solar panels don’t produce the amount of power we’ve promised , you will in fact get a check from us paying off whatever electric bill you receive!
5. Objection: "I'm Worried About the Installation Process." / "I'm worried the installation process will be disruptive and lengthy." / "I've heard that solar panel installation can damage the roof."
NEPQ Response: Empathize and then guide them towards a clearer understanding of the process.
"It's understandable to be concerned about disruption. What specific aspects of the installation are you most worried about?"
"Would it be helpful to know that most installations are completed within a day or two, with minimal disruption to your daily routine?"
NEPQ Response: Acknowledge their concern and provide reassurance.
"Protecting your home is important. What concerns do you have about potential damage to your roof?"
"How would you feel knowing that our installation teams are highly trained and we take every precaution to ensure the integrity of your roof is maintained throughout the process?"
Response: "Our installation process is streamlined and hassle-free. Our team handles everything from the initial assessment to the final installation, ensuring minimal disruption to your daily life. We also take care of all the necessary permits and inspections and we take care of everything on the back end. I like to joke with my homeowners that one day you go to sleep paying your extremely high utility company and then the next day you wake up to saving thousands of dollars with solar! Thats how easy it is!
6. Objection: "I'm Not Sure if I Trust Solar Technology."
Objection: Waiting for better technology.
NEPQ Strategy: Discuss the evolution of solar tech. "Knowing that solar technology has been evolving since 1886 and is now at a highly efficient stage, how might immediate savings impact your decision?"
Response: "Solar technology has advanced significantly and is now a reliable and efficient source of energy. It's being adopted worldwide, not just by homeowners but also by large corporations and governments, due to its proven efficiency and sustainability. The most interesting thing i find in solar technology is honestly the fact that i didn’t know how long this technology has been around!
Let me ask you out of curiosity….. Do you have an idea of when the actual first solar cell was invented?
Customer: (Um i would say i started seeing them about 20-30 years ago)
Response: This is what blows me away ! Before i got into this industry i would have said the exact same thing! Guess what!? Solar has been around since 1885 and thats almost 150 years! It’s safe to say that solar technology isn’tgoing to be making some major jump as the technology is extremely advanced and efficient - can you imagine how our cellphones are going to look in 150 years!?
7. Objection: "I Don’t Like How Solar Panels Look."
Objection: Some homeowners don’t like the look of solar panels.
NEPQ Strategy: Emphasize choice and control. "If we could find a way to install solar panels without affecting your home's appearance, would that make you more comfortable?"
Response: Perfect! That is exactly why i’m here! So our aesthetic of solar panels has improved greatly, with sleeker and more integrated designs now available. Some options are barely noticeable. I’m sure you’ve seen the old solar panels lying around that look like giant cheese grators on homes in the neighborhood am i right ? Well our panels are extremely low profile , sleek and we make sure to hide all the conduits so that there are no wiring hanging out.
It’s kind of like this; i’m sure when gutters first came out most of the neighborhood said “ No! I don’t like the way they look!” but once homeowners realized the purpose they serve is so important - they all put gutters on there homes!
8. Objection: "I'm Waiting for Technology to Improve."
Objection: Waiting for better technology.
NEPQ Strategy: Discuss the evolution of solar tech. "Knowing that solar technology has been evolving since 1886 and is now at a highly efficient stage, how might immediate savings impact your decision?"
Response: "While solar technology continues to advance, the current technology is already highly efficient and can provide significant savings. Waiting might mean missing out on current tax incentives and immediate energy savings( And refer back to 6. )
9. Objection: "I Don’t Understand How Solar Fits Into My Energy Use."
NEPQ Response: Start with empathy and lead them towards clarity.
"It's important to understand how solar will meet your energy needs. Can you tell me about your current energy usage and concerns?"
"How do you feel about exploring how solar energy can not only fit into but also enhance your current energy setup?"
Educate on Solar Energy Use:
"Solar panels generate electricity during the day. Any idea how this could work with your daily energy usage patterns?"
"Would it be helpful to learn how solar energy can reduce your reliance on the grid and provide more predictable energy costs?"
Discuss Energy Surplus:
"Did you know that any surplus energy your solar panels generate can be fed back into the grid? How do you feel about potentially receiving credits for this excess energy?"
"Imagine your solar panels producing more energy than you use during peak sun hours. How does the idea of storing or selling this excess energy sound to you?"
Personalize the Explanation:
"Let's talk about your typical day at home. How might solar energy support your activities differently than your current energy source?"
"Considering your household's energy needs, how do you see solar energy making a positive impact?"
Response: "Let me explain how it works. Solar panels will generate electricity during the day, which you can use in real-time. Any excess energy can be stored or fed back into the grid, often for a credit. This can significantly reduce your energy bills and dependence on traditional power sources. In other words we eliminate your Electric bill forever and your new solar bill is about half as much.
10. Objection: "What Happens if There’s a Power Outage?"
NEPQ Response: Begin with understanding and empathy, then guide the homeowner towards reassurance.
"Concerns about power outages are completely valid. How often do you experience outages in your area?"
"What are your main worries regarding how a power outage might affect your home if you had solar panels?"
Response: "Solar systems can be equipped with battery storage to provide backup power during outages. This means you can have a reliable power source even when the grid goes down, ensuring your home stays powered."
